Advertising in Windows 11, now in the file explorer

Posted by

A few days ago, Insiders testers discovered a new type of advertising in Windows 11. The ads appeared as “suggestions” in the system file explorer and as expected, user criticism piled up. This is not a place to put advertising, nor to camouflage it as if they were “advice”.

Brandon LeBlanc, senior manager of Windows programs, has had to come on stage to reduce the controversy by explaining that it was an “experiment” and that should not have been seen by users: “This was an experimental banner that was not intended to be served externally and has been removed”. This brief statement does not rule out that ads will return to this or other applications in the future because Microsoft has shown that it has the capacity to do so. And wanting to do it to boost their services or monetize the system in a way that is quite frustrating for users.

Advertising in Windows 11

Microsoft’s latest operating system comes packed with Bloatware, just like Windows 10. Unnecessary or unwanted “junk” software, added to a slew of internal Windows tools, apps, and services. And if you buy a new device you will have to add another ten applications from the manufacturer. Very few are useful and the vast majority are not necessary for the operation of the operating system. penalize the user experiencethe performance of the equipment, its stability and even security as we saw in the Lenovo Superfish case.

Add advertising and spam. Microsoft has been experimenting with ads within Windows for the last decade. In Windows 10 and 11 it places ads on the lock screen and in the Start menu, and even more annoying ones in the taskbar or in the Settings tool where it does not stop promoting its OneDrive cloud storage service or suite MicrosoftOffice. WordPad has already been used to promote Office Online and the Mail client to advertise Office, not to mention the desperate attempts to boost market share for the Edge browser and the Bing search engine. File explorer in Windows 10 was also used for these purposes.

Advertising in Windows 11

Advertising in Windows 11 is abundant. Some are more subtle and others more direct. While some of these ads can be removed in the settings, there are others that cannot be removed and disguising them as “advice” when it is pure advertising does not help the user experience. Not to mention the added difficulties in Windows 11 for the user to be able to change the default applications and continue using those of Microsoft.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is not alone in promoting its services in its operating system or applications. If you buy an iPhone, you will receive spam from apple with offers from Apple Music, Apple Fitness, or iCloud. And if you buy Apple TV hardware, you’ll see full-screen ads for the TV Plus service. And from Google on Android what to tell you that you don’t know For example, promoting the YouTube Premium subscription every time you open the video portal app.

You already know our opinion. The operating systems, whether desktop or mobile, must arrive as clean as possible and the provider in question must offer the rest of the services and applications as an optional download for the user. And the same with spam and advertising. It is understandable that brands want to promote their own subscriptions, in systems that are already mostly “free”, but the level we are reaching reaches harassment. It is also not the best to infantilize the user camouflaging them from «recommendations, advice or suggestions“, nor use core applications like a file explorer to enter them.
