The new genetically modified tomato variety has become the first food produced with the CRISPR-Cas9 tool and can be purchased normally. So far only in Japan, but one day… who knows.
The tomatoes in question were prepared to contain high levels of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Tokyo-based Sanatech Seed says it can promote relaxation and lower blood pressure.
“GABA is a well-known health-promoting compound in Japan. It’s like vitamin C, “said Sanatech Seed Technical Director Hiroshi Ezura. “That’s why we chose it as our first target for our genome editing technology.”
But it has one catch. As Scientific American points out, there are no truly credible studies to confirm these alleged effects of γ-aminobutyric acid.
Ever since the sale of tomatoes was approved, there have been discussions about whether this is more of a misleading advertisement. Some analyzes to date are more positive than others about the potential benefits, but we will have to wait a while for the final verdict.
