Honor presented its first folding phone at its conference today. Unlike Huawei, the company follows a path of construction where you turn a normal-sized phone into a small tablet when opened. So the same as Samsung has with its Galaxy Z Fold3. Honor also compared himself to him several times.
As it is a premium device, the company also chose top materials. The body is made of an alloy of titanium and zirconium metals, complemented by carbon fibers, which gives the phone strength but also durability. Despite the lack of certification, the phone has to deal with possible falls, which has been demonstrated several times. The joint itself is then dimensioned for 200,000 bends, which in practice means fifty openings and closings per day for ten years.
But the phone is also very elegant. When closed, it is only 14.3 mm thick, which currently makes it the thinnest “jigsaw puzzle” on the market. This was mainly helped by a special display bending mechanism, where there is no visible gap between the halves after closing. In the open state, the phone is only 6.7 mm thin. The back also offers 3D curved glass, which makes the phone look stylish in silver, black and orange.
Honor Magic V offers a pair of OLED displays. The outer one boasts a diagonal of 6.45 “, at a refresh rate of 90 Hz. However, opening the phone smoothly transfers the displayed content to the 7.9 ”internal display, which has a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz. The user can look forward to smooth images and great colors thanks to IMAX Enhanced certification.
The best equipment
The phone’s performance is taken care of by a top Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor with a 4nm production process. It is supplemented by 12 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage. The advanced graphene cooling system then prevents overheating in the load. Security was also thought of thanks to a special chip that takes care of encrypting sensitive data.
The new Magic UI 6 system built on top of Android 12 is also to make a big difference. It promises better optimization, customization for the big screen and multitasking, but also improved GPU and OS X turbo, which will give the phone even more performance when needed. The Link Turbo X system is then designed to ensure seamless switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
A novelty is the Magic Live function, which is to adapt to the user’s habits and then offer him suitable applications and recommendations. The advantage is the close connection with other facilities in the product ecosystem. The phone can be used, for example, as an extended computer screen.
The Honor Magic V offers just three rear cameras, while the main, ultra-wide and night camera have the same resolution of 50 Mpx. A front 42 Mpx sensor is then available for selfie. The phone uses a battery with a capacity of 4,750 mAh with support for fast 66W charging, which charges it to 50% in 15 minutes. The company promises that the phone should handle one day of normal use.
So far, the phone has only been introduced in China, where it is available today for the price of 10,000 yuan (CZK 34,000) for a 12 + 256 GB configuration, or 11,000 yuan (CZK 37,500) in a 12 + 512 GB version. We do not yet have any information about when and whether it will be available globally.
