Migration of universities to domestic
Plans to transfer leading Russian universities to domestic solutions emerged from the authorities against the backdrop of American sanctions against institutions. So, in November 2021, the American authorities added the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) to the sanctions list. This implies the introduction of restrictions on the export, re-export and transfer of American products within the country, according to the website of the US Department of Commerce. Various electronics fall under the restrictions, and they can also apply to American software. MIPT came under restrictions due to “the development of military products for a military customer”, it was noted in the documents of the Ministry of Trade.
MIPT is not the only institution facing US sanctions. At the end of 2020, MSTU named after M.V. N.E.Bauman. Since December 2020, the institute has been left without Microsoft products. The reason for the refusal to sell licenses for Windows MSTU at Microsoft was the fact that the university trains specialists in weapons.
In December 2021, it became known about the Government’s plans to transfer Russian universities from foreign “hardware” to computers based on domestic processors “Baikal” and “Elbrus”. We are talking about those educational institutions that train specialists in the field of radio electronics.
