We get back to the load with a new article on networking basics. On this occasion we are going to talk about two concepts that are often used when we talk about the quality and capabilities of a Wi-Fi network: Range and stability.
Before we get into the matter, it needs to be clear why these two concepts are so important when we talk about a Wi-Fi network. If we use a Wi-Fi network it works through Radio waves that can travel a certain distance before it’s completely useless. This means that it has a limited scope.
On the other hand, when we are using a Wi-Fi network, the intensity with which we receive the signal can significantly affect the stability of our connection, and will depend heavily on the scope. So the greater the range, the more likely it is that we will receive the signal with sufficient intensity even though we are far from the router, and the closer we are, the better we should have the connection.
Reach and Stability on Wi-Fi Networks: What They Are and Why They Matter
The range of a Wi-Fi network can be defined as the maximum distance it can travel with the generated signal. It is important to remember that this maximum is given by the furthest point from the router where we still have an internet connectioneven if it is not optimal or does not perform well.
On the contrary, stability indicates the correct functioning of the connection, that is, the Absence of micro cuts, heavy packet loss and drops. To understand better, an example is enough, if we have an internet connection that doesn’t stop throwing us or losing the signal, that connection will have stability problems. These can occur for many reasons, including problems up to and including network saturation.
And why are both concepts important? This can be inferred from what we set out in the previous paragraph, and it is so that in the end both concepts reflect two central pillars that are necessary for a good internet connection. If the range is insufficient, we will not have Wi-Fi connection in many areas of our home or office, and if the stability is not good we will not stop dropping and losing connections.
It is important for a good range If you are using a good quality router, place it in a convenient location and free from obstacles and minimize interference as much as possible. If we want to achieve good stability, all of the above can help us too, and we should avoid situations where the network can become completely overloaded.
