LG Display announces that it has partially solved one OLED panel pain. It announced a new technology OLED EX (Evolution and eXperience, development and experience), with which she manages to increase maximum display brightness up to 30%.
OLEDs have many advantages over LCDs, but their maximum achievable brightness is half or one-third, so a high dynamic range (HDR) image may not be as compelling. If the best OLED TV shines about 800 rivets (and only on a small part of the picture), the best LCDs at peak times can handle almost 2000 rivets. But OLED EX could subdue the thousand next year.
The company will start producing new large-format panels from the second quarter of 2022 in both of its factory complexes, the Korean city of Paju and the Chinese canton.
LG managed to increase the brightness by modifying the panels. In the organic layer, the company has so far used hydrocarbon compounds, but in the new diodes it will replace hydrogen molecules in their heavier form. deuterium. This is 6000 times rarer to nature, but LG is said to have found a way to extract it efficiently from water.
Deuterium will improve the properties of OLEDs, but LG will also help with software. He talks about clever algorithms that will more precisely control the voltage on the diodes and estimate from the picture where the energy needs to be directed.
As a bonus, OLED EX will allow you to produce panels with thinner frames. At 65 inches, they should be reduced by a third to 4 mm. The panels themselves will be 30% thinner.
We could see the first OLED EX TVs from LG and other manufacturers in the second half of next year.
