The current level of development of information technology, the Internet of things, edge computing and their deep penetration into all production processes require an extensive network of local computers located at workplaces or in close proximity to serviced objects

It is not so obvious that the installation of any PC requires infrastructure support. Along with the Ethernet cable, you need to run a power supply – at least one wire for each PC and at least two electrical outlets (one for the PC and one for the monitor). Switchboards, fuses and other electrical attributes must be added here. Electrical networks and devices require maintenance and revision, so staff salaries and depreciation costs must be added to operating costs. The costs of laying and maintaining electrical networks can be quite noticeable.

The need to solve these problems has led to the emergence of a new class of computers – the so-called PoE computers. The acronym PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. This is a network feature that allows you to supply power over Ethernet cables. Initially, PoE was used to power only network devices, such as wireless access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones, etc. The development of technology has made it possible to power computers and monitors from PoE.

Some of the benefits of powering a PC from PoE include:

– Economic efficiency. By eliminating the need for expensive electrical outlets, wiring, permits, and specially certified or licensed contractors, you can significantly reduce costs.

-Safety of use and implementation. PoE uses what is known as extra-low voltage, making it safe to use in all workplaces, schools and universities, healthcare facilities, residential areas, and other environments.

– Convenient and familiar infrastructure. PoE computers connect to the IP network using TIA and ISO/IEC twisted-pair cables (Category 6A or higher recommended). Cable installers and technicians do not require additional training or qualifications.

– Acceleration of project implementation time. Because no electrical cabling is required, PoE computers can be installed in hours or days instead of weeks, dramatically reducing project timelines and speeding time to payback.

– A more environmentally friendly solution. PoE computers are energy efficient and use less than half the power on average than comparable desktop computers.

– Increased flexibility and scalability. Moving computers or adding devices using PoE computers is quick and easy.

Ease and cost-effectiveness of backup power supply. Instead of providing each PC with a separate UPS, it is enough to connect a PoE switch or other PoE generating equipment to a single UPS. Yes, this single powerful UPS will cost a lot, but it will be cheaper than a large number of low-power UPSs anyway.

– Health care. Security (no electrical cables or outlets required), low implementation cost, and consolidated redundant power means mission-critical PoE computers can always be on and available.

– Production. Internet of things. PoE computers are often used in industrial environments where power points can be expensive and difficult to access. No need to connect to a 220V/50Hz (110V/60Hz) power supply makes their use in such conditions safer.

– Retail trade. The use of PoE PCs and monitors as part of POS equipment will significantly reduce the cost of its deployment and operation.
