Research continues on the possibilities of wireless underwater laser communication: domestic scientists conducted a series of unique experiments, as a result of which the length of the hydrospheric route was doubled (from nine to 18 meters). Similar studies in laboratory conditions have not previously been carried out in Russia. This was reported to CNews by representatives of MTUCI.

For the experiments, a part of a unique scientific installation for wireless underwater optical communication, created at the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI), was used. An important addition was LIDAR, developed by scientists from the Institute of General Physics A.M. Prokhorov (IOF RAS).

“LIDAR measures sequentially located scattering layers using the probing principle proposed at the end of the 20th century: an extremely low level of energy radiation, in this case a few microjoules per pulse, registers a response signal from objects in a probabilistic mode. The single-photon gating receiver suppresses noise and receives the signal despite obstructions,” said Pavel Titovets, head of the sector “Promising technologies of optical communication” MTUCI.

A series of experiments was carried out at a distance of nine to 18 meters in water, the total length of the track was 24 meters. Scientists used various obstacles imitating rocks, metal, stone and wooden surfaces.

The results obtained allow scientists to conduct a series of full-scale experiments at the next stage and subsequently solve the problem of high-speed data transmission between underwater and terrestrial objects.
