Have you ever wondered what famous person was born in your city? No need to look it up on Wikipedia. Topi Tjukanov, a map designer and geographer at Mapbox, pulled data from the online encyclopedia and placed it on an interactive map called Notable people, where you can view people by region.
It is interesting how the map evaluates the “significance” of personalities. According to The Verge, Tjukanov was based on a recent study in the journal Nature, which looks at people’s fame and calculates it based on several aspects from Wikipedia.
One is the amount of text in these people’s biographies, across different languages. Added to this is the number of views of biographies between 2015 and 2018. Next is how much important information is known about the personality, such as date of birth, his studies, etc. (a lot is known about influential people) and, last but not least, how much is there for the biographical text on Wikipedia established external links.
Based on these parameters, each personality received a score and was placed on the map exactly in the city where they were born. The more important, the more visible it is on the map, regardless of whether it is a person with positive connotations.
When looking at a map that includes the whole world, the most prominent are mainly historical figures – in Europe, for example, Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, Winston Churchill or Aristotle shine, simply because there are the most mentions of them and they influenced a lot of events.
However, this could be assumed. Therefore, the display of individual regions will be particularly interesting. The map covers all countries of the world, including the Czech Republic, and Sigmund Freud, who was born in the Moravian-Silesian Příbor, was evaluated as the most important person with a Czech birthplace. Right behind him is Franz Kafka, originally from Prague.
Other Czech historical figures also figure prominently on the map. For the current ones, one has to click through and view a very detailed view to show them, and athletes such as Petr Čech, Martina Navrátilová and Dominik Hašek predominate anyway. It therefore follows that the greatest glory of the Czech Republic is currently made up of athletes.
The good news, however, is that there is no area that produces more personalities in our country. All regions show a lot of names to be proud of.
