In the second half of the 18th century, it was not customary for women to study astronomy. Not to mention that they get paid for it. Caroline Herschel was the first. Some sources state that she was the first woman in history to receive a salary for scientific research (which may not be true) and also the first woman with an official and state-paid position in England (that is certainly true).

She was small in stature, so her parents didn’t give her much of a chance at life. She wanted to be a singer. She got into science when she was an assistant to her brother (in fact, and in her own words, more of a maid). He got to his own science when his brother was not at home…
