The Israeli armor ROBUST fights infantry and tanks autonomously

Autonomous combat vehicles are a trend in the development of armored vehicles today. Israeli arms giant Elbit Systems recently introduced the ROBUST medium armored vehicle for advanced autonomous combat against infantry and armored vehicles, which visitors to the Eurosatory International Ground Arms Technology Fair have now had the opportunity to see.

ROBUST is loaded with modern systems. The basis is a robotic platform BLR-2, which is equipped with an autonomous combat tower with a 30 mm cannon, originally developed for the new Israeli armored vehicle Eitan AFV.

ROBUST also has an “Iron Fist” active protection system developed by Elbit Systems, as well as advanced fire control and mission management systems, plus a “robotic” autonomous vehicle control kit and a passive detection kit from Elbit Systems and Foresight. As is currently customary, ROBUST carries a drone (or drones) that can be sent for reconnaissance, along with a system for launching and picking it up.

The ROBUST Technology Demonstrator, set up by Israel’s DDR & D (Directorate of Defense Research & Development) and Tank & APC Directorate, has advanced maneuverability and can carry a variety of loads.

Day and night, in any weather …

In the future, ROBUST should be equipped with IAI launchers and Spike anti-tank missiles, manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The new armor should operate with a high degree of autonomy, day and night, in any weather and in virtually any terrain.

The model of its autonomous operation is based on simplicity, minimal involvement of human operators and the possibility of integration with other autonomous systems of various types.

The ROBUST system was created as part of the “autonomous battlefield” program that DDR & D is working on in Israel, in collaboration with the Tank & APC Directorate. It is designed within an open architecture, for easy integration of other systems, including future technologies, which should provide this combat vehicle with additional tools and options in its operations.

The ROBUST vehicle is the culmination of many years of effort and investment. Next year (2023) field trials should begin, with different scenarios for the use of this remarkable armor.
