According to statistics published by the American computer assembler, Puget Systems, the still very “fresh” Intel Core processors of the 11th generation are distinguished by a high percentage of defects. Moreover, both in comparison with the samples of the previous generation, and the competing line of AMD Ryzen 5000, which, however, is also not ideal. But the series of chips for workstations Intel Xeon W 2200 demonstrated almost perfect quality. In addition to processors, Puget presented data on other components, in particular on video cards and persistent storage.
The American company Puget Systems, which assembles computers to order, named the most reliable and most problematic components with which its employees had to deal with between 2019 and 2021.
Puget specialists, in particular, collected statistics on the frequency of failure of devices such as central processing units (CPU), video cards (GPU), storage devices – solid state drives (SSD) and hard drives (HDD), as well as RAM and power supplies ( PSU). The company did not dare to analyze the reliability of motherboards – given the overall high complexity of this device and the wide range of models used by Puget, its results would be unrepresentative.
Separately, we took into account the cases of elimination of defective components at the stage of assembling the system unit by the company’s employees and situations in which the “hardware” broke already during operation by the buyer.
In addition, according to Puget, the statistics did not include computer components that were damaged during transportation, as well as as a result of mishandling by customers and technical specialists of the company.
As Pudget points out, a modern processor, despite its complex internals, is actually one of the most reliable components of a computer. There are no mechanical elements in the CPU, as, for example, in hard drives. In addition, processors undergo rigorous post-production testing. All that is needed for such a chip to “live” for a long time is sufficient cooling and refusal to overclock.

The statistics provided by Puget first show the fantastic reliability of Intel Xeon chips. The W 2200 series, aimed at workstations, boasts literally zero failure rate: the company’s specialists did not encounter a failure during operation of the CPU of this family, or a failure when testing a finished assembly. However, it should be borne in mind that the collector sold the least configurations based on these processors, so one should not draw far-reaching conclusions from such statistics. Server Xeon Scalables of the second generation also showed an outstanding result: only 0.33% of all samples were rejected, there were no complaints from customers about these chips.
On the whole, AMD processors performed worse than conventional competing chips from Intel. For example, about 2% of processors in the popular Ryzen 5000 desktop line were rejected by Puget employees; with respect to 0.77% of configurations based on the chip database, customers had claims that were deemed valid.
However, the 11th generation of Core processors showed frankly disastrous results – 5.28% of defects and 1.32% of breakdowns in work – against the background of an almost perfect tenth (0.19% and 0.29%, respectively). Puget considers such an outcome strange, and Tom’s Hardware suggests that the Rocket Lake family, which includes the 11th generation Intel Core, includes very “hot” models that require high-quality cooling.
In September 2021, Cloudflare announced that it will build the 11th generation of its edge servers based on AMD Epyc 7713 processors (Milan). A large service for the protection of Internet resources refused from Intel Xeon Scalable chips of the third generation due to their excessive, according to the company’s experts, the level of power consumption.
In July 2021, CNews wrote about a series of tests conducted by Puget specialists, which demonstrated the advantage of AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3000 processors over Intel Xeon W 3300.
Why administrators won’t notice cloud migration
In February 2021, PC builders from PowerGPU accused AMD of a high defect rate in the new Ryzen 5000 processors, which allegedly reaches 6%.
The statistics on video cards are notable for the fact that they lack AMD graphics accelerators. According to the data published by Puget, its customers exclusively choose Nvidia hardware. As for vendors, the company buys video adapters that are in short supply today mainly from Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY and, in fact, Nvidia.
The most reliable among the accelerators of the latest RTX 3000 family were the reference models, that is, those released by Nvidia itself (0.41% / 0.26%). They are equipped with a unique cooling system that allows you to build configurations from two cards without any problems, explains Puget.

The appalling rejection rate of professional Nvidia Quadro RTX adapters is striking – at the level of 6.8%. However, in reality, as noted in Puget, the quality of these maps is not so bad. Almost all of the devices in this series that were screened out in the assembly phase contain a manufacturing defect associated with the problematic VirtualLink (USB-C) port in the RTX 4000 model. A large batch of such cards arrived at Puget warehouses in May 2020.
As for hard drives, Puget admits that the company has mainly relied on Western Digital products in the past few years and only in 2021 has seriously taken on the devices of its main competitor – Seagate. Therefore, the company considers the data on the Seagate HDD to be unrepresentative and does not publish it.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that high-performance WD Ultrastar hard drives aimed at the corporate segment fail and turn out to be defective somewhat more often (0.73% / 0.39%) than those intended for building “quiet” home network attached storages (NAS ) WD Red drives (0.52% / 0.34%).

In terms of the SSD segment, Puget’s experience shows that Samsung flash drives have traditionally demonstrated a high level of reliability. Absolutely hassle-free at the end of 2019-2021. SSD 870 EVO / QVO have been recognized. Only 0.1% of Samsung 860 Pro drives were rejected by collectors with no claims from customers on their account. The performance of the 980 Pro in the M.2 form factor is also very high at 0.09% and 0.11%.
Puget specialists had much more questions about the Seagate Firecuda 520 M.2 (0.65% of defects). However, there have been no complaints from customers about this SSD.
