The speed of the cards doubles. PCI Express 7.0 increases line throughput to 16 GB / s

PCI SIG completed the specification for the new PCI Express 6.0 interface at the beginning of the year, but is already working on a successor and has announced a plan for where to go with the “seven”. The final PCIe 7.0 is due to arrive in 2025 and, following the example of its predecessors, will double the throughput again.

PCIe 7.0 is again based on PAM4 modulation, but remains backward compatible with version 1.0. The goal of the organization is to increase the reach of the interface and its effectiveness, but the specific spells are still secret.

The throughput of one line will increase to 16 GB / s (really 15.76 GB / s), which is the same as PCIe 3.0 had at the full 16-line slot for graphics and other cards. PCIe 7.0 moves up to 256 GB / s (252.2 GB / s in real terms) in full configuration. PCI SIG doesn’t even pretend to be interesting for regular desktops.

Wider channels are to be used in HPC, the cloud, machine learning calculations or fast server interconnection. Terabit Ethernet is approaching, specifically interfaces promising 800 and 1600 Gb / s, which will need a stronger base.
