Yandex Market reduced its delivery service’s emissions by nearly 5,000 tons of CO2-equivalent in a year by planning couriers’ routes using artificial intelligence technology from Yandex Routing. This was reported to CNews by representatives of Yandex Market.

A forest area comparable in area to Bitsevsky Park, the second largest park in Moscow, can absorb such a volume of greenhouse gases in a year.

“Yandex routing” automates the planning of transport resources and offers the best routes for drivers, allowing you to deliver more orders with fewer vehicles.

The order of passing points by couriers is determined by the algorithm, taking into account historical data on traffic jams at different times of the day on different sections of the road. “Routing” also takes into account the work schedule of warehouses, the promise to the recipient in terms of delivery time, service time at the client and other operational features of a particular company – more than 300 different parameters in total. This ensures an accurate forecast of the time of arrival at each of the points, reducing runs and downtime.

As a result of this route optimization, large companies are able to reduce fleet mileage by an average of 18.8%. In the case of Yandex Market, over 12 months, this allowed to reduce emissions by 4,975 tons of CO2 equivalent (a conventional unit used to estimate the volume of greenhouse gases).

What does this mean

Approximately as many greenhouse gases would not be released into the atmosphere if a thousand gasoline-powered cars were off the road for a whole year. This is the average amount of gases produced when generating enough electricity to charge 605 million smartphones. To absorb this amount of greenhouse gases in a year would require a forest area of ​​23 square meters. kilometers is a little more than the area of ​​Bitsevsky Park, the second largest in Moscow.

How emissions reductions were calculated

The amount of emissions saved is the difference between the GHG emissions from the mileage in the “Routing” non-use scenario and the GHG emissions from the actual mileage. The scenario value was obtained by multiplying the actual value by the “Routing” efficiency factor, which was derived based on the reduction in mileage for service customers with similar logistics tasks to the “Market”. The actual value is calculated based on the total fuel consumption data, where fuel consumption is the sum of the products of vehicle mileage and average fuel consumption per kilometer.

Calculation details

During the year from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, Market’s couriers-partners in light trucks and vans (mainly with fuel-efficient diesel engines) traveled a little over 64 million km. On passenger cars (mainly using gasoline) – more than 40 million km.

The fuel consumption of vehicles used by the couriers-partners of the Market was assessed taking into account the characteristics declared by their manufacturers. On average, the consumption was about 8 liters of gasoline for passenger cars and 8 liters of diesel fuel for trucks per 100 km of track (additional consumption from driving with a load and idling was not taken into account as insignificant).

The mileage savings was estimated according to the data on trips of transport of large companies-clients of “Routing” from the fields of logistics, retail and e-commerce, delivering food and non-food products of various categories (daily demand, fashion, DIY, etc.) both to customers and to warehouses, darkstores, shops, pickup points. As a result of using “Routing”, the fleet mileage of such companies is reduced by an average of 18.8% compared to “manual” route planning.

Based on the average reduction in mileage, the economy of gasoline in the cars of “Market” amounted to 747486 liters, diesel fuel – 1185766 liters.

Emissions were estimated in accordance with the international guidelines for mobile emission sources – the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The amount of fuel saved was multiplied by the emission factors from the combustion of different types of fuel, as well as by the global warming potential (GWP) of the estimated types of greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide. The global warming potential is a coefficient that determines the degree of their impact on global warming. It converts their emissions into CO2 equivalents.

The result was a total reduction in emissions in CO2 equivalent: 4975 tons.

Emission factors for these gases were proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and today they are traditionally used for such calculations. In the calorific value of the fuel, we were guided by the IPCC technical guidelines and GOST coefficients.

Yandex Routing is working on creating an emissions savings calculator for customers, and also plans to calculate the environmental impact of implementing Routing through existing partnerships.
